Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur
After one month of island hopping and jungle trekking, I’m back in town. Kuala Lumpur (or KL) is a big city with skyscrapers and shopping malls. I went to Times Square shopping mall. A huge complex with ten floors and a roller coaster on the seventh floor! Together with the Spanish guys Alberto and Marc, I admired the famous Petronas towers from up close. Later that evening, we marveled at the communications tower and the twin towers with a cold beer in our hands from the roof top bar of our hostel, Reggae Mansion. Not too many, because alcohol is very expensive in Malaysia. The government imposes high taxes on alcohol. A beer costs easily 10 ringgit (2,5 euro) or more. Compared to other South East Asian countries, that is pretty expensive. In Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, I paid around one euro for a beer. Public transportion in KL is incredibly good. Everything is easily accessible by sky train and it’s cheap. I went to the Batu caves with the monorail. The caves are located 13 km outside of Kuala Lumpur and the ride to get there and back costed me just a little bit more than 1 euro. I went to see Temple Cave, a Hindu shrine guarded by a 43 meter high Murga statue, the largest in the world. To enter the sacred place, you first have to climb 272 stairs.

Na een maand eilandhoppen en jungletrektochten, zit ik weer in een grote stad. Kuala Lumpur (of kortweg KL) is een stad met hoge gebouwen en shopping malls. Ik ben naar het winkelcentrum Times Square gegaan. Een gigantisch complex met tien verdiepingen én een achtbaan op de zevende verdieping! Samen met de Spanjaarden Alberto en Marc ben ik de bekende Petronas towers van dichtbij gaan bewonderen. Later op de avond aanschouwden we de communicatietoren en de twin towers met een fris pintje in de hand vanop het dakterras van ons hostel, Reggae Mansion. Niet te veel want alcohol is ontzettend duur in Maleisië. De overheid heft een fikse taks op alcohol. Een biertje kost al snel 10 ringgit (2,5 euro) of meer. In vergelijking met andere zuid-oost Aziatische landen is dat duur. In Thailand, Laos, Cambodja en Vietnam betaalde ik rond een euro voor een pintje. Het openbaar vervoer van KL is ontzettend goed. Alles is makkelijk bereikbaar met de sky train en het is goedkoop. Ik ben naar de Batu grotten geweest met de monorail. Deze grotten liggen 13 km buiten Kuala Lumpur en de rit heen-en terug heeft me net iets meer dan 1 euro gekost. Ik ben naar Tempelgrot geweest, een Hindu heiligdom dat bewaakt wordt door een 43 meter hoog Murga standbeeld , het grootste ter wereld. Om de heilige plaats te betreden, moet je wel eerst 272 trappen klimmen.
