Peru: Nazca – Lines

We made a short stop in Nazca for a flight over the world-famous Nazca lines. A network of more than 800 lines, 300 geometric figures and some 70 animal and plant drawings spread across 500 sq km in the desert. The most elaborate designs include a monkey with a curvaceous tail, a spider and an astronaut. According to Maria Reiche, a German mathematician and researcher of the lines, the lines were made by Paracas and Nazca cultures between 900 BC to 600 AD. The question is why people made these lines as they can only be properly appreciated from the air?  Some advice:  Motion-sickness  sufferers should consider medication. Many people experience motion sickness in the aircraft. The pilote makes sharp turns so all passengers can see the lines.  We did the 30-minute tour in the early morning as there is almost no turbulence at that time of the day.

We hebben een korte stop gemaakt in Nazca voor een vlucht over de wereldbekende Nazca lijnen. Een netwerk van meer dan 800 lijnen, 300 geometrische figuren en zo’n 70 afbeeldingen van dieren- en planten verspreid over 500 vierkante kilometer in de woestijn. De opvallendste tekeningen zijn de aap  met een krulstaart, een spin en een astronaut. Volgens Maria Reiche, een Duitse wiskundige en onderzoekster, zijn de lijnen gemaakt door de Paracas en Nazca culturen tussen 900 voor Christus en 600 na Christus. De vraag is waarom mensen die lijnen hebben getrokken in die tijd want je kan ze enkel vanuit de lucht zien?  Goede raad: Medicatie tegen reisziekte is aanbevolen. Veel mensen worden ziek in de vliegtuigjes omdat de piloten heel de tijd scherpe bochten maken zodat alle passagiers de lijnen kunnen zien.Wij hebben de tour in de ochtend gemaakt want dan is er bijna geen turbulentie.
