Australia: Sydney

Last Friday, I arrived in Sydney safe and sound. I stumbled upon a nice working hostel. Tokyo Village is perfectly located in a quiet suburb, Surry Hills. It’s a five minute walk from Central and a ten minute walk from the city centre.  I started working already on Monday. Thanks to the hostel owner, Charlie, a German guy who arrived here also as a backpacker twenty years ago. In my first week Australia, I have found two jobs: in a printing company and in the hostel. Sydney is a great city: big (but not too big), clean, good infrastructure, safe, beautiful beaches,… I like it so much that I’ve decided to stay here for the next month(s). I’ve always wanted to live and work for a while in a great world city. After four months of backpacking, I am a bit tired of moving around the entire time. It would be great to stay longer in one place, getting to know people better and earn money again. I will be trained to become a receptionist in the near future. But I have to learn more about Sydney first. As an assignment, I have to first visit all the main tourist attractions in and around the city, such as Harbour Bridge, Opera House, Botanic Gardens, Hyde Park, Darling Harbour, Bondi and Cogee Beach, Blue Mountains,… I know what to do in the coming weeks.

Vorige week vrijdag ben ik goed aangekomen in Sydney.  Toevallig ben ik in een leuk werkhostel terecht gekomen. Tokyo Village is perfect gelegen in een rustige buitenwijk, Surry Hills, op  vijf minuten wandelafstand van het centraal station en tien minuten van het centrum.  Op maandag was ik al aan het werk, dankzij de eigenaar van het hostel, Charlie, die hier twintig jaar geleden zelf arriveerde als rugzaktoerist. In mijn eerste week heb ik twee jobs gevonden:  in een drukkerij en in het hostel. Sydney is een geweldige stad: groot (maar niet te groot), proper, goede infrastructuur, veilig, prachtige stranden. Ik vind het zo tof dat ik heb besloten dat ik de komende maand(en) hier blijf. Na vier maanden backpacken, ben ik het even beu om heel de tijd rond te trekken. Heerlijk om even wat langer op dezelfde plaats te blijven, mensen beter te leren kennen en weer geld te verdienen. En ik heb altijd al een tijdje in een wereldstad willen wonen en werken. Binnenkort krijg ik opleiding tot receptioniste in het hostel. Maar eerst moet ik Sydney beter leren kennen van Charlie. Als huiswerk moet ik de voornaamste toeristische trekpleisters in en rond de stad bezoeken zoals Harbour Bridge, Opera House, de botanische tuinen, Hyde Park, Darling Harbour, Bondi en Coogee Beach, Blue Mountains… Ik weet wat te doen de komende weken.
